Leading the Arts Through a Pandemic:
Music's Ph.D. Students
In the final episode of the Leading the Arts Through
a Pandemic series, Dean Barker sits down with Joao
Martins (Ph.D. History and Theory of Music ’25) and
Omar Costa Hamido (Ph.D. Integrated
Composition, Improvisation, and Technology ’21) to
discuss their experience in the two unique Ph.D.
programs in the Music department. After completing an
M.F.A. in Musicology at CTSA, Martins is continuing his
study of traditional Brazilian in contemporary culture
through the History and Theory of Music Ph.D. program.
Hamido is in his final year of the ICIT Ph.D. program,
and currently completing his thesis on Quantum Computing
and Music Composition.
